DIY Tips for Spring Yard Maintenance
The sun is out and the snow has stopped falling, and that means spring is here. With the changing season comes the need for a few important spring yard maintenance tactics, and at Impressions Landscape, Pools & Spa, our landscaping contractors have you covered.

Mower
For people who winterized a mower over the colder season, there are a couple basic checklist items for the spring. Check the mower blades, which will likely need sharpening, and do this if it’s needed. Make sure you remove the spark plug before you take blades off for sharpening. Dull blades can lead to tearing in the grass, and fungus development in some cases.
In addition, early-spring mowing techniques are bit different than normal. Grass needs more space to grow during cool seasons than the hot summer, so mow your grass a bit higher than you might during, say, July.
Clean Lawn and Gardens
Another basic first step after a thaw is to clean your lawn and any garden areas of any debris that may have accumulated over winter. This includes branches or other bits of nature, plus specific clearing of leaves and other obstacles from areas that need mulch.
Mulch Concerns
Once areas are properly cleaned, you can begin laying mulch. In the spring, the best layer will be around four inches high overall beds – this will help prevent weeds.
Planting
Springtime planting requires no pre-emergent be used on new grass or sod, rather just a balanced, organic-based fertilizer. From here, planting is a simple process – make sure soil is in the right condition, including a soil test if needed, and add any organic matter or compost to help soil structure and deep root promotion. Deeper roots mean fewer insects and less heat-related stress, which can lead to a lower watering bill with the same high-quality results in many cases.
